How much does Google Ads cost in 2026? Two real accounts against the US average

The most quoted number about Google Ads is the American average: $5.42 a click in 2026. Our Romanian account paid €0.10. Our Italian one, €0.15. The gap is not an error; it is the whole answer to "how much does Google Ads cost", worked out in clicks, enquiries and management fees.

The terrace of a café with a striped awning on a cobbled street, a man in a suit walking past, towards evening
A small business is visible from the street for free. On Google, visibility has a price on every click, and that price is what this article is about.
In brief

What we put on the table. The real cost per click of two accounts managed by Cittago (Romania and Italy, June 2026), Google's own forecast for September 2026, bid ceilings for five industries in Cluj and Florence, the US all-industry average from LocaliQ's 2026 report, and the management fees agencies in both countries publish. Every figure with its source and its date.

Why it is not for everyone. Two accounts tell you what two accounts paid, not what you will pay. If you sell legal or financial services, your click lives in a different league from a guesthouse's. This article gives you the scale and the method, not a guaranteed price.

What you leave with. A monthly budget expressed in clicks and enquiries rather than abstract money; a one-line rule for reading the Keyword Planner forecast; and the going rate for management, so you know what is normal before you ask for a quote.

  • The US average is 47 times what our Romanian account paid per click, in the same month of the same year.
  • €1,000 a month buys 10,000 clicks in our Romanian account, 6,667 in the Italian one, and about 214 at the US average.
  • Management is paid separately from the budget handed to Google: published fees run from €239 a month (a Cluj freelancer) to €400–800 a month (a Florence agency).
  • Google's forecast missed by 43% in one direction and 15% in the other. It is a planning tool, not a price list.

Where the famous $5.42 comes from

Cost per click in Google Ads is what you pay Google each time someone clicks your ad, set by an auction at every search; the most quoted benchmark, LocaliQ's 2026 all-industry average, is $5.42, while two European accounts we manage paid €0.10 and €0.15 in June 2026.

Keep that sentence; the rest of the article takes it apart. There is no "Google Ads price" the way there is a price of fuel. There is an auction that restarts every time someone types something into Google, and your price depends on who else bids on the same search, how relevant your page is and how much you are willing to pay. That is why every number below carries a date and an account: without a timeline, a cost-per-click figure is an anecdote.

The $5.42 has a clear pedigree. LocaliQ, the WordStream parent, publishes an annual Search Advertising Benchmarks report; the 2026 edition, out on 1 June 2026, covers thousands of Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns across more than twenty industries between April 2025 and March 2026. Alongside the average click it reports a 6.64% click-through rate, an 8.18% conversion rate and a $66.69 cost per lead. It is a serious dataset. It is also American, in dollars, and dominated by industries where a client is worth thousands.

The blank notebook is the right stage: the budget is written after you have read the bid ceiling in Keyword Planner, not before.

Our timeline is short and checkable. We have managed Google Ads accounts since 2011, back when it was AdWords. In June 2026 a Romanian account we manage paid 0.52 lei per click on average, about €0.10 at the ECB rate of 1 September 2026. An Italian account paid €0.15 the same month. Google's Keyword Planner forecast for Romania for September 2026, pulled in early August, was 0.92 lei, about €0.18.

01 · The US average against two real accounts

The US average click costs 47 times our Romanian click

One unit, a click, on four scales. The American figure is the all-industry average from LocaliQ's 2026 report; ours is what two accounts we manage actually paid in June 2026.

The chart has one bar that flattens the others, and that is the point. The US average is not "the price of Google Ads"; it is the price in a market where a lawyer pays $9.87 a click and a restaurant $2.05. When someone tells you Google Ads is expensive, ask in which currency and in which country they read the number.

Why one industry pays five times another

Because competition sets the price, not demand. We tested this in two cities, pulling twelve months of bid ranges from Keyword Planner for five industries each. In Cluj, hotels are searched 3,600 times a month and car repair shops 1,600 times; the repair shops still have the most expensive click. In Florence, hotels are searched 40,500 times a month and car inspections 390 times; the inspection click is the dearest of the five.

Hairdressers880 / €0.512,900 / €0.77
Rural stays1,000 / €0.3512,100 / €0.68

From inside an account the explanation is plain. Many small firms bid on car repair, each with a healthy margin per customer, so each will pay for a phone call. Few bid on rural stays, the margin on one night is thin, and the ceiling stays at €0.35. Demand tells you how many customers you could have; competition tells you what each one costs. The full tables, query by query, are in our study of click costs in Cluj and Florence.

What €500, €1,000 and €2,000 a month buy

This is where the theory ends. A budget is not a sum of money; it is a number of clicks, and the number of clicks becomes a number of enquiries. We divide three monthly budgets by the real price in each account, and by the US average, so you can see the whole range.

03 · What a budget buys

Hypothetical example

Invented figures to show the mechanism, not data from a client. With €1,000 and 6,667 clicks, a 2% conversion rate means 133 enquiries, or €7.50 each; at 5%, 333 enquiries at €3 each. You only learn your conversion rate from your own account, after the first weeks, and it is the number that decides whether Google Ads is cheap or expensive for you.

Google's forecast against the invoice

Keyword Planner gives you a forecast before you spend a cent. It is a good tool on one condition: read it as a forecast. We put it next to the invoices in two markets at once.

04 · Forecast against invoice

Romania paid 43% below Google's forecast; Italy paid 15% above it

The same two markets, two sources: the Keyword Planner forecast for September 2026, and what two accounts we manage actually paid in June 2026, in euros.

€ / click
Romania · forecast€0.18
Romania · actual€0.10
Italy · forecast€0.13
Italy · actual€0.15
A forecast is a planning tool, not a price. It missed by more than 10% in both markets, in opposite directions.

In Romania the account paid 43% less than forecast; in Italy, 15% more. That is not a flaw in the tool. The forecast works from the market average, the account works from its own history: an account with relevant pages and ads people actually click is rewarded by Google with a lower price for the same position. The Italian account was younger and in more contested industries. Both numbers are real; neither is yours.

The rule we use: budget the first month at the forecast price, not the hoped-for one. If reality comes in below the forecast, month two gets free clicks. If it comes in above, you have not promised anyone a number you cannot deliver.

The sum in the notebook is the one in this article: budget divided by price per click, then by conversion rate. The banknotes are American; the arithmetic is the same in euros.

What management costs: the fees agencies publish

The budget handed to Google is only part of the cost. The other part is the work of building and keeping the account in shape: keywords, ads, pages, exclusions, bids, reports. Some agencies publish what they charge; we read three of them on 2 September 2026.

Published Google Ads management fees, read on 2 September 2026

Monthly fee, one or two platformsan agency in Florence€400–800 a month for one platform; €800–1,500 for Google and Meta together

Monthly range by volume and budgetNecesit.ro, a Romanian price list for 20261,300–5,000 lei a month (about €250–950)

What they share: the fee is paid separately, and the ad budget goes straight to Google. What they share with us: the work starts with an analysis, not a rate card. Thirty minutes with a senior strategist, account open, to see where the budget leaks before you raise it; the analysis stays yours whatever you decide afterwards. If you want to see what a month of Google Ads management at Cittago actually contains, the service page has the full list and the questions clients ask us.

Who does not need paid management: a business spending under €300 a month with one simple offer. At that budget a €239 fee is most of the budget, and it is healthier to learn the account yourself, with Keyword Planner and the forecast rule above. Who does: a business where every enquiry is worth hundreds, because there a badly kept account wastes more every month than management costs.

What you need before the first euro is spent

  • A page for the click to land on, with the offer, the price or the form in view. A click on a general "about us" page is money thrown away.
  • The customer's actual wording, checked in Keyword Planner, not the product name from your catalogue. People search "car repair cluj", not "vehicle maintenance services".
  • A way to count enquiries: form, phone, WhatsApp, each as a conversion event. Without it you never learn your conversion rate, so you never learn the real price of an enquiry.
  • A budget set at the forecast price, with the rule above, and four weeks of patience before the first stable numbers.
  • Exclusions: the words you do not want to appear for (free, used, courses) are written on day one, not after the first invoice.

What these numbers do NOT say

  • They do not say what you will pay. Two accounts and ten industry rows from two cities; a new account in another industry has its own price from day one.
  • They do not say a cheap click is a good click. €0.10 paid for a click that calls nobody costs more than €1.50 paid for one that calls.
  • They say nothing about Meta Ads, where there is no search auction and cost is judged per thousand impressions. That is another article.
  • They do not include the page, the copy or conversion tracking, which are built once and paid separately.
  • The $5.42 is an average across more than twenty industries, in dollars, on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads accounts. Use it as a scale, not as a benchmark for Europe.

Glossary: the words on the invoice

The terms you see in the account, one line each
TermWhat it means
Cost per click (CPC)What you pay Google for one click on the ad. Set at every search by auction, and rarely equal to the maximum you set.
Bid ceilingThe top of the range Keyword Planner shows for the first position. The number to look at when you estimate a budget.
Daily budgetThe daily average you give Google. On one day it may spend up to double, but over a month it will not exceed the daily budget times 30.4.
Conversion rateThe share of clicks that become enquiries. From your account, after the first weeks; never from articles.
Cost per enquiry (CPA)Budget divided by enquiries. The one number that says, on its own, whether Google Ads is cheap or expensive for you.
Smart BiddingAutomated bidding in which Google picks the price of each click to hit a target cost per enquiry or value. It needs counted conversions to learn.

Three thresholds, to place yourself

  1. Under €300 a month. Learn the account yourself. One industry, one page, five to ten phrases from Keyword Planner, a budget set at the forecast. You pay attention, not management.
  2. Between €300 and €1,500 a month. The threshold where a lost enquiry costs more than an hour of work. Here a free analysis with someone who has seen hundreds of accounts pays for itself, or a fixed monthly fee if every enquiry is worth hundreds.
  3. Over €1,500 a month. The account becomes a system: several campaigns, Smart Bidding, monthly exclusions, a page per offer. Management stops being a cost; it is what keeps the click below the forecast, the way our Romanian account sat at €0.10.

Every figure in this article has a date next to it, and every one of them will move. We will talk about this again in 3–6 months 😉

Questions nobody has actually asked us

The article is new, so these are the questions we hear in free analyses, in the order they usually come up.

How much does Google Ads cost per month for a small business?

The budget you hand to Google is yours to set; there is no imposed minimum. From the arithmetic above, €500 a month buys 3,333 clicks in our Italian account and 5,000 in the Romanian one; €1,000 buys 6,667 and 10,000. Management, if you pay for it, is separate: published fees run from €239 a month (a Cluj freelancer) to €400–800 a month (a Florence agency).

What is the average cost per click on Google Ads in 2026?

The most quoted figure is LocaliQ's US all-industry average of $5.42, from thousands of Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns between April 2025 and March 2026. Two European accounts we manage paid €0.10 (Romania) and €0.15 (Italy) in June 2026. There is no single average; there is a scale.

Why did Romania pay below Google's forecast and Italy above it?

Because the forecast uses the market average and the account uses its own history. The Romanian account had more relevant pages and more clicked ads, which Google rewards with a lower price for the same position; the Italian one was younger and in more contested industries. Both directions are normal.

Do you pay Google Ads per click or per impression?

On the Search network, per click: you pay only when someone clicks. Impressions without clicks cost nothing, but they say something about relevance: an ad shown often and clicked rarely is charged more per click over time.

How much is a Google Ads management fee?

Published models differ: in Florence, €400–800 a month for one platform and €800–1,500 for Google and Meta together; in Romania, a monthly range of 1,300–5,000 lei or a fixed fee from €239 a month. At Cittago the work starts with a free 30-minute analysis, not a rate card.

Is Google Ads worth it with €200 a month?

Worth it as a school, not as an engine. At €0.15 a click that is 1,333 clicks; with a 2% conversion rate, 27 enquiries. Enough to learn what people search for and which page convinces them, not enough to live on. Do not pay for management at that budget.

How do I set the budget for the first month?

Take the Keyword Planner bid ceiling for your phrases, multiply by the clicks you want per day and by 30.4. Budget at the forecast, not at the hoped-for price: if reality comes in below, you get extra clicks; if it comes in above, you have not promised a number you cannot deliver.

Which industries have the most expensive clicks?

In LocaliQ's 2026 US report, attorneys and legal services ($9.87), home improvement ($8.33) and dentists ($8.00). In our Cluj and Florence figures, car repair and car inspection top the list (€2.77 and €1.56 ceilings). The rule is the same everywhere: the more a customer is worth, the more firms bid for them.

Google Ads or SEO for a small business?

Google Ads brings clicks from day one and stops when the budget stops; SEO brings clicks after months and keeps going without a click budget. With €1,000 a month, Google Ads tells you within four weeks which phrases bring enquiries, and that list becomes the SEO plan. We do them in that order, not in parallel.

Last updated: 2 September 2026. Account figures were read in June 2026, the Keyword Planner forecast is for September 2026, the LocaliQ report covers April 2025 – March 2026, and the market fees were read on 2 September 2026. We update this page when any of them changes.

We had the cabins and the view, but Cittago gave us the perfect digital “reception”. They created a premium, ultra-fast website for us that handles everything on its own: live calendar, automatic invoicing and card payments (only 1% commission instead of 15–20% on platforms). The best part? We edit it ourselves in a few minutes, without depending on anyone. And Paul is simply unreal for this world! The warmth, respect and attention to detail with which he explains absolutely everything make you understand the services offered perfectly. Not to be missed is the availability that Paul shows when you have a question. Honestly, I have rarely dealt with such a professional and dedicated company.

The collaboration I have had since the beginning, that is, for several years, with Cittago is a real pleasure! I turned to Paul to rebuild the website of a small dental clinic and I am extremely satisfied with the collaboration. Paul is still taking care of the website. The promptness with which he responds to me, the patience with which he explains everything I don't understand (and there are many, believe me 😂🙈), his maximum involvement and desire to give his best have always helped me and given me a lot of confidence in him. He is always there when I need him. Very professional! And the quality-price ratio is unbeatable. I recommend Paul with confidence, if you want someone who really puts his heart into what he does and gives his best!

Using his knowledge, he was able to create a user-friendly, visually beautiful, responsive (on both mobile and desktop) website that communicates the services and products we offer very well. The website not only looks great, but it works just as well. Throughout the process, Paul was receptive to feedback, and patiently answered all the requests I had.
